betterthanaplanDuke couldn't say exactly what it was that made him head to his office today of all days. He just . . . wasn't in any rush to go back to his boat. His birthday had never meant much more than the number on his age turning over, but this year, with everything else that was going on (with knowing his mother was alive, knowing where she was, and not knowing either for sure about Octavia), it was hitting him differently than usual.
And well. Not even the new super-detective was likely to come find him in his office.
He didn't notice it right away. He hadn't been in here in ages, and couldn't say for sure that his various office supplies hadn't always been blue and green, and anyway, that seemed like the sort of thing Fandom might just do. The yoga mug and the shark stress toy could have been that, too, really; the island had set up a whole shark-and-butterfly themed blanket fort back in March, after all.
The pictures, though. The prom photo with him and Octavia in their pajamas, the shot of Polly. He sat down sharply, pressing his hand to his mouth. And then his eyes landed on the card. It took him several moments to work up the courage to open it.
Tavi's secret lock-picking scheme is done, so fill that in in your notebook.
It was a good thing he'd locked the door behind him when he'd come in. That he'd already been that sure he didn't want anyone interrupting. No one needed to see him snatch up the little blue tape dispenser and hurl it full force at the wall. Followed by everything on the desk that wasn't that mug, those pictures, the card. That wasn't clearly from her.
And they definitely didn't need to see him collapse back down into his chair and bury his face in his hands and finally, after three weeks of searching and worrying and missing her, break down and cry.
