Duke and Octavia had entertained a guest last night. Which was the perfect excuse for Duke to go all out in the kitchen this morning, whipping up omelettes and waffles and bacon and sausage and plenty of fresh fruit. He always kept his galley well stocked when he was in port for just such an occasion, though he'd had less of a reason to really show off in the last few months that he used to.

Lucifer was a snob, though. So Duke really wanted to bring his A-game.

"So. We thinking mimosas? Bloody mary's? I make a mean irish coffee. . . ."

"If I can spend a weekend as an actual duke, I'm sure that diner's been, like, a seedy nightclub or something at least."

Lucifer blinked. "You were an actual duke?" he asked, with barely restrained amusement. "Did I miss this?"

"It was before we met," Octavia supplied, looking up at Duke. "Right before, actually, I think? Maybe I'm a tiny bit bummed I missed that."

But she'd been busy planning to seduce and murder Anakin, so...

"I'm not," Duke said. "I was Duke Duke. Of Windsorhamceistershire or something equally absurd. It was my first experience with the real weirdness around here."

"So how was your duking around the place?" Lucifer said, grinning.

Octavia's head tilted, just by a fraction. "It involved suits, right?"

"It involved suits. And planning to sail off to an imaginary landlocked town in order to claim my supposed inheritance."

Lucifer snickered, and glanced at Octavia with some mirth. "Gremlin bite?" he said. "Or were you off doing something entertaining at the time, as well?"

"I think I was trying to seduce someone into marrying me," Octavia drawled, rolling her eyes "so I could kill them and get their money."

Kind of sad how the only part of that that actually came naturally to her was the cold-blooded murder.

"It was a whole thing. Rey thought she was a barista who wanted to be a wedding planner."

"Did you all just collectively decide to act out a soap opera?"

Lucifer did not need to try to poke Octavia - visibly, above the table - in the side, but the whole ridiculous close proximity issue - and, frankly, just feeling a bit better in general - made him slightly more fourteen years old than usual.

Followed by Octavia's highly dignified swatting away of his hand. Almost spilling coffee in the process.

"It was one of those -- weird weekend things. I'm pretty sure."

It'd been a long, long time ago.

"Children," Duke said, aiming his fork at them. "Don't make me put you both into time out."

Because he clearly was the adult at this table.

"I have it on good authority that it was, in fact, one of 'those weekends'. Did you get hit with the 'wearing the wrong genitals' thing last year, Luce?"

Lucifer snorted. "Why would I?" he said.

Octavia shifted in place a little, because the poking had clearly jostled her. And not at all because she was trying to conquer any extra space for herself, perish the thought.

"Luce rarely gets hit with any of this," she drawled. Last week not withstanding, but they really didn't need to talk about that, and she was sure they agreed.

"Well that's just not fair," Duke said. "I assume it's part of the whole 'actual angel' thing."

"Yes," Lucifer said, reaching out to poke Octavia again because he could see what you were doing. "You two are the product of someone lobbing two sets of human genes in a jar, shaking it a bit, and seeing what comes out. I was made this way."

Which he punctuated by finishing his booze, thank you.

"More or less," he amended. "Mother had a bit of a say in me as well."

Octavia tried to ignore the poking, this time.

... But she was definitely wrinkling her nose, so. Good job, Octavia.

"And that's why you miss out on all the fun."

He was definitely going to have to separate them.

Eventually.

"It's definitely . . . an experience. And I did pick up some lovely new clothes to go with the new body."

"And what kind of fun were you having, miss Octavia?" Lucifer asked, amused. "Or didn't you get to have, or enjoy, any lovely new clothes?"

"I wore Bellamy's," Octavia replied, dryly. (Resolutely ignoring the pang of -- look, she wasn't even going to try pinpointing what it was, she was ignoring it.) "And I was uncomfortable pretty much the entire time."

Not because of the clothes, mind.

"Which sucks," Duke said, shaking his head. "Since you're one of the ones who helped me figure out how to be comfortable in a girl-shape." He looked at Lucifer. "She braided my hair. It was sweet and quiet and absolutely fraught with sexual tension I was trying to ignore at the time."

"That's just precious," Lucifer said.

Yes, the fact that was only half-sarcastic confused him too.

Octavia snorted, looking across the table at Duke.

"Either I was really good at ignoring the tension, or just really bad at realizing it was there."

It was more the latter, yes.

"Well, you were still young, yet. Barely 21, if I'm remembering right." Twelve years younger than him. Which had made him feel rather like a dirty old man for awhile at the beginning.
