Duke and Octavia had entertained a guest last night. Which was the perfect excuse for Duke to go all out in the kitchen this morning, whipping up omelettes and waffles and bacon and sausage and plenty of fresh fruit. He always kept his galley well stocked when he was in port for just such an occasion, though he'd had less of a reason to really show off in the last few months that he used to.

Lucifer was a snob, though. So Duke really wanted to bring his A-game.

"So. We thinking mimosas? Bloody mary's? I make a mean irish coffee. . . ."

Octavia tried to ignore the poking, this time.

... But she was definitely wrinkling her nose, so. Good job, Octavia.

"And that's why you miss out on all the fun."

He was definitely going to have to separate them.

Eventually.

"It's definitely . . . an experience. And I did pick up some lovely new clothes to go with the new body."

"And what kind of fun were you having, miss Octavia?" Lucifer asked, amused. "Or didn't you get to have, or enjoy, any lovely new clothes?"

"I wore Bellamy's," Octavia replied, dryly. (Resolutely ignoring the pang of -- look, she wasn't even going to try pinpointing what it was, she was ignoring it.) "And I was uncomfortable pretty much the entire time."

Not because of the clothes, mind.

"Which sucks," Duke said, shaking his head. "Since you're one of the ones who helped me figure out how to be comfortable in a girl-shape." He looked at Lucifer. "She braided my hair. It was sweet and quiet and absolutely fraught with sexual tension I was trying to ignore at the time."

"That's just precious," Lucifer said.

Yes, the fact that was only half-sarcastic confused him too.

Octavia snorted, looking across the table at Duke.

"Either I was really good at ignoring the tension, or just really bad at realizing it was there."

It was more the latter, yes.

"Well, you were still young, yet. Barely 21, if I'm remembering right." Twelve years younger than him. Which had made him feel rather like a dirty old man for awhile at the beginning.

"I have to admit this is the first time I've heard of braiding causing any kind of sexual tension," Lucifer admitted, amused, "But whatever floats this man's boat."

"You wouldn't know, your hair's much too short," Octavia drawled, skipping over any comments she could have made about her sexual past off the island. "Sorry."

"It's an intimacy thing," Duke said. "Letting someone else touch and play with your hair."

Lucifer tossed Octavia an amused look. "You should have seen me in the 10th century," he said.

"Why, was this disappointing thing a flowing mane?" Octavia retorted, reaching up to try and muss up his hair.

Duke choked faintly on his waffle and laugh-coughed into his arm.

"I cannot picture that at all."

Lucifer gave them both some serious glaring. "It was in fashion at the time," he said, "This is in fashion now. You two are just slobs."

"No," Octavia said, drawing her hand back again, "he's beautiful, and I just don't care."

Look, at least her hair was slowly but surely growing out of the 'cut straight with a knife' look it'd had when she'd returned.

"We're both beautiful. And very clean," Duke agreed. "And not beholden to fashion, thank you."

"Yes, I know you're beautiful, I've slept with both of you," Lucifer sighed, "That doesn't mean you're not slobs, which is exactly what 'not beholden to fashion' is slang for."

"Your insults would work better if we cared," Octavia pointed out, helpfully.

Reaching out to shovel more food onto her plate.

"That's not what 'slob' means," Duke said, both confirming and denying her statement, since he did care, and thus the insult worked. "I am very clean."

Look, he'd occasionally slept in literal dumpsters growing up. He was a little touchy.

Lucifer - who, for his standards, was dressed extremely casually in just his suit trousers and a crisp white shirt that, shocker, he hadn't even buttoned up the whole way - sighed at him. "No need to get touchy," he said, "I'm well aware you showered."

He took a sip from his nearest drink. "I just sometimes miss the late 40s around here. Now that was a time where people knew how to dress to the nines."

"Again, means nothing to me," Octavia noted, a little milder than before. There was a mountain of fruit and waffles on her plate again, and this seemed like the perfect time to add some syrup on top.

And to give Duke's foot a gentle nudge under the table.

Duke bit back a protest that his space was orderly too at Octavia's nudge and turned his attention to his omelette instead.

"Seivarden's a bad influence on you. Next thing, you'll be calling us 'uncouth' for not wearing hats when we go out."

"Please," Lucifer said, rolling his eyes. "Seivarden would pass out in shock at the sight of anything uncouth, I'd just take it as a sign that both of you need to be indoors and undressed as soon as possible. Not necessarily with me in the room, the knowledge would be enough."

This was altogether too much syrup on Octavia's plate. Or maybe exactly the right amount? Whichever, it was mostly the result of a repeat nudge against Duke's foot before she drew hers back again.

She snorted. "So we're, what? Sexy savages, now?"
