"Don't rub it in," Lucifer sighed. He looked at Duke. "Right, so how does this work...?"

"Here, let me show you." Duke reeled the line back in, then held the rod out to Lucifer again, showing him how to reel and cast. "When I was a kid, I thought this was the best part. Casting the line. Once you get it out there, you mostly just sit and wait for something to bite."

"Really? Because that sounds like the better part," Lucifer said, watching the little-- thing at the end hit the water. "Sitting and drinking."

Honey, see above re: how good you were at sitting still.

"Uh huh," Duke said, amused. "I was a fidgety kid. Sitting still wasn't my favorite thing."

"Then fishing seems like a terrible hobby to begin with," Lucifer pointed out. "Why go for it at all?"

"Free food," Duke said simply, looking out over the water.

"Ah," Lucifer said.

He looked out over the water, too.

Duke let that hang for another beat, then shrugged. “Anyway. As I got older, I learned to appreciate the peacefulness of it, you know? Things get loud and the fish run away.”

"Fish meditation," Lucifer supplied, tossing him a small smile.

“Fine, fish meditation,” Duke said, amused. “Meditation that ends in food.”

"If you're lucky," Lucifer said, amused. "I'm not seeing you bring in any fat, fresh fillets yet."

"Patience, babe," Duke chided. "It's all about patience."

"You could be out here all night," Lucifer pointed out. "If you really wanted to catch something."

"Sometimes. Especially if you keep talking," Duke said. He didn't sound like he'd mind.

Lucifer chuckled. "What, are the fish going to hear us?"

"You laugh, but they do. And get scared away."

[my_own_advocate]

"So you truly don't get to do anything but sit here," Lucifer said, eyeing the fishing rod in his hands dubiously.

“Sit and wait for them to bite,” Duke said. “And enjoy quiet company and ponder the nature of the universe.” He leaned against Lucifer’s side. “Fish meditation.”

"You are an incredibly strange man," Lucifer sighed.

As he wrapped his arm around Duke's shoulders. He didn't like the fishing, but he liked the strange man, and-- sigh, he was smiling like an idiot again.
