Octavia was a raccoon.

Duke sat on his deck, cradling a cup of coffee in his hands and staring out at the water.

Octavia was a raccoon.

Again!

It wasn't really a disaster? He kept reminding himself of that. She was perfectly safe and healthy, se was just . . . a raccoon. There was absolutely no need for the flood of adrenaline currently washing through his system. Or for all his varying urges to try to fix something. Rewire his nav system again, maybe. Work on the plumbing. Octavia was just going to be a raccoon until she wasn't again, and there was noting to be done about it.

He hated not being able to do anything about things.

Lucifer let out a frustrated sigh.

"Yes, I suppose," he said. He glanced at the water. "Whereas the two of us should just drink heavily until this is over."

Duke raised his coffee. “Oh trust me, I have already broken out the baileys.”

Lucifer made a noise like 'egghhk', and said, "I think this may be a more-than-Baileys problem."

“You know drinking also won’t turn her human again, right?”

[my_own_advocate]

"No, but it might make us feel better," Lucifer said.

He was eventually going to drop out of steamroller mode and probably insist on the two of them curling up in bed with a bottle of good wine, yes.

But Duke still had more brooding to do!

“Well, I’ll keep that in mind for later.”

Lucifer sighed.

"You aren't going to randomly leave again and then come back with new rims for the Rouge or whatever, are you?"

“. . . It’s a boat. It doesn’t have rims.”

That was basically the only thing stopping him from doing that, though.

Lucifer just looked at him there, yes.

“. . . I might be thinking about double checking the nav system.”

[my_own_advocate]

"Or, we can go back into the bedroom, drink a nice bottle of wine, and watch something profoundly stupid on Netflix," Lucifer suggested.

Duke very nearly asked what that would fix. Instead he looked at the raccoon.

“Can we bring Octavia?”

She was his emotional support racconified girlfriend!

"As long as she's staying on your end of the bed," said Lucifer.

“I’m sure she’ll be good.”

He could not promise that.

Hey, another Look. "Please," Lucifer said. "It's Raccoontavia."

Duke let out a soft laugh. “I’ll snuggle her into submission.”

Lucifer rolled his eyes. "As long as it gets you into the bedroom."

“Not something we’d normally not have trouble with.”

[my_own_advocate]

"Yes, well, there'll be a raccoon in the bedroom, I doubt our usual activities will recur."

“That . . . is kinkier than I like to get.”

[my_own_advocate]

"Exactly," Lucifer sighed.

He was not going to acknowledge that he would be perfectly happy snuggling with Duke in front of some kind of terrible long-running 12-season show about crime vampires or whatever.

Crime vampires did sound hilarious, though.

“Alright. I’ll finish my brooding coffee and then we’ll be sad lumps head back below decks.”

"Thank you," Lucifer said. "I'm going to go pour us some scotch."

Duke started to give him a sad lazy wave, then thought better and gestured him over instead.

“Come gimme a kiss first.”

And here Lucifer had already half-turned towards the galley.

He turned back, sighed, and-- well, expelled at least some of that steamroller energy.

"If you insist," he said, walking towards Duke.
