A remote corner of the beach, not quite onto the preserve, Thursday afternoon

It was a lovely day for fishing, neither too hot nor too cold, the sun bright in the sky.

Duke would be way better at enjoying those facts if he wasn't quite so busy boggling at the fact that Lucifer had decided to join him on this particular fishing trip.

He kept as much of an eye on his boyfriend as he did his line, waiting for a catch with both. That was almost poetic. He could write a song about that. . . .

"You know this is literally just . . . fishing, right?"

"Yes, I'm aware," Lucifer said, nodding patiently. "I've done this before."

"Like. Barely," Duke said. He tried to relax. "I mean. Not that I'm complaining. You're always welcome to join me. I like having you here."

"And I enjoy spending time with you in return," Lucifer said, reaching into his pocket for his flask. "Even if I don't understand this hobby in the slightest."

"Well. When you get bored, let me know. We'll head back into town."

Even if Duke hadn't caught anything for the diner yet.

"Oh, no, I know this takes a while," Lucifer said. He leaned over, peering at the little thingie in the water. "You'd think eventually they'd realize the danger inherent in free food."

"They're fish, Luce. Their brains are the size of peanuts. If that."

"Seems like a bit of an oversight in my Father's creation, frankly."

[betterthanaplan]

"If they were smarter, what would we eat?" Duke asked.

[my_own_advocate]

"Cows?" Lucifer suggested. "The stupidity seems rather fitting on those creatures."

"Their farts are destroying the ozone," Duke said with great solemnity. "Speaking of errors in your dad's creation."

[my_own_advocate]

"He really did underestimate your people's ability to self-destruct for short-term gain," Lucifer agreed. He sat back, reaching into his pocket for his phone, and switched to the camera app.

[betterthanaplan]

"And yet supposedly it's his fault we're like that at all."

[my_own_advocate]

"It's got a certain irony to it, doesn't it?" Lucifer asked, flicking his camera to 'film'. "'I'm going to put you into this situation, but anything you do with that situation is your own choice, ergo you deserve whatever's coming to you'."

He clicked record.

Duke looked over at him, smirking faintly. "Are you trying to record a rant for Tiktok or something?"

"I'm trying to film your progress," Lucifer retorted. "And take some pictures later, when you've caught some ridiculous quantity of seafood."

Well. Turning documentarian when he got bored was better than some alternatives Duke could think of.

"Can't argue with that," he said, and threw up a peace sign for the camera like a giant nerd before looking back at his line.

"You're very good at fishing," Lucifer added. "It seems worth documenting."

"To be fair, there's very easy fishing on this island," Duke said. "I catch way more around here than I would pretty much anywhere else."

And then the line went taut and he focused fully in on it, moving through the task of hooking the fish and reeling it in like a professional. It took awhile -- he'd caught something big.

He whistled through his teeth as he lifted it from the water -- all 3 feet of it. IT was easily 40 pounds. "See? Who catches a pollack this size this far south?"

Lucifer was a bit too busy filming the whole thing to comment immediately. He lowered his phone after a moment or so and said, "Pollack? That's a terrible name for anything that unsexy."

He immediately raised his phone again to snap a picture.

Duke snorted. "I didn't name it." He hefted the fish in both arms and aimed its mouth in Lucifer's direction. "What would you call it, then?"

"Naming things was Adam's job, and he was clearly terrible at it," Lucifer said. He pulled a face.

And took another picture.

"Yeah, well. He sounds like a dick, anyway."

"He was, and not particularly adept with the one he had, either."

Duke shook his head. "Damn shame. Eve was a sweetie."

"I'm honestly surprised she lasted with him as long as she did," Lucifer commented, dropping his phone in his lap. "Father knows lasting wasn't his strong suit."

Lucifer was just calling them as he saw them!
